Pregnancy is that time of life when most women go on an overdrive to do ‘things’ for the little one about to be born. Scouting for baby clothes, doing up the nursery on the lines of their favorite theme and simply thinking of how life’s going to be a few says later…mothers-to-be have lots to worry about but sadly somewhere along the way they forget to give themselves as much care and attention. Shopping for maternity clothes is something that perturbs most mums-to-be. So here are a few tips that can help you out-
Get into the recycling mode- Many women feel buying maternity clothes is all about going to the biggest departmental stores and getting expensive stuff. Well, just hold on to your purse strings for the time being coz probably you have good clothes in your very own closet. Look through your old things. Are they too small for you or too old to drive you into depression? Think, think, think If not why bother throwing them away. Most of us have several pieces that would fit us well if we were to get pregnant. If what you have are a tad too tight you can think of buying similar stuff. That way you’ll also know where to look for your clothes.
Ransack hubby dearest’s closet- This is the closest you can get to finding over- sized shirts and tees. And I’m sure, in most cases they’ll fit you perfectly. Apart from the big belly, you might also find your legs swelling. Under such circumstances, nothing fits better than a large T- shirt and pajamas that otherwise are a bit too loose. Well, you may not be a T-shirt person after all. In that case you can always convince your husband to lend you some of his older shirts so that you can wear them unbuttoned with a good- looking tee inside!!
Needn’t beg or steal but DO BORROW- There’s no point wasting dollars over stuff that you think you won’t wear once your pregnancy is over. Since its a nine- month journey you can actually make do by borrowing clothes from siblings and friends who’ve already become mothers. Also, they can be real good advisers as far as maternity shopping goes (remember, experience pays!!!!). Another advantage of borrowed clothes is that you can simply use them to know what’s a hit and what you can actually think of as a ‘miss’. Borrowing clothes at this stage is well worth a try.
Avoid going overboard with shopping- And what’s the best way to ensure that? Of course, by making yourself a shopping list. This might seem to you to be from the old school of thought but this tactic can never fail you when shopping is all that counts. A shopping list is also instrumental in understanding what you ‘really’ need. It’s simple calculation which means you don’t need to scratch your head every time you venture out to shop. Being systematic also helps you save more.
And..finally..a list of must- have maternity clothing items-
1. Long tunics preferably in solid colors (choose pastel shades).
2. A long black dress (so that the bulges can be hidden effectively).
3. Drawstring pajamas (at least a pair that’ll let your bump be at rest).
4. Black leggings (something that you can team up with almost anything, be it a shirt, a tee or a long top).
and 5. Oversized shirts with bold stripes (so that they add to your length).
